Rim & Mortice Door Knobs
What's the difference, I hear you ask? There's no need to panic - it's really very simple...
- Rim knobs tend to have detachable backplates and are used with rim OR mortice latches
- Rim locks or latches are metal boxes fitted on the door surface (see the section above for examples)
- Mortice knobs have two backplates which are usually fixed, and are ONLY used with mortice latches
- Mortice locks or latches (a more recent development than rim locks) are fitted in the edge of the door
